Combine Harvester Header Mechanism

Combine Harvester Header Lifting Mechanism: Where Mud, Dust and Heavy Loads Converge — SAVI EP Series Plastic Bearings Keep Harvesters Running Steadily in the Field

Products used: EPG general-purpose engineering plastic sliding bearings + EPX heavy-duty engineering plastic sliding bearings

Application positions: Header hydraulic lifting hinge joints, reel oscillating mechanism, unloading auger rotary supports

Operating requirements: Mud and water resistance, dust resistance, impact and vibration resistance, maintenance-free operation, UV resistance

Customer Background

A well-known domestic combine harvester manufacturer with an annual output of more than 2,000 units, covering harvester models for wheat, corn and rice — the three major crops. Its best-selling model features a 4.5 m cutting width and 160 hp rated power, operating in China's three major grain-producing regions — Northeast China, the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, and the middle and lower Yangtze River — with working environments spanning two extremes: dry fields and paddy fields.

After adoption, the customer's bearing service life was extended to three harvest seasons of maintenance-free operation, and the customer complaint rate dropped by 68%.

Problem Description

The harvester header lifting mechanism originally used metal bronze bushings, which presented three major pain points in actual service:

1. Mud and water ingress causing rust seizure. During paddy field operations, mud and dirty water splash directly into the header lifting hinge joints. After internal corrosion, the bronze bushing seizes against the steel shaft, and the header can no longer be raised or lowered, severely impacting operating efficiency. During the harvest season, a single day of downtime can cost a farmer tens of thousands of yuan.

2. Accelerated wear from dust. In dry field operations, dust levels are high. Large amounts of dust particles become embedded in the clearances of metal bearings, causing abrasive wear. The inner bore of the bronze bushing shows obvious ovalization after 200–300 hours, and the increased clearance causes header vibration.

3. Impossible to maintain on site. The harvest season is time-critical, and farmers cannot stop to hand-grease the bearings. In the absence of grease, metal bearings run in dry friction, which intensifies wear — on average, both the bushing and the shaft must be replaced every two harvest seasons.

Solution

After investigation, the SAVI technical team recommended a combination solution of two engineering plastic sliding bearings for this harvester model: the EPG general-purpose and the EPX heavy-duty series. The EPG material matrix contains specialty solid lubricant and high-strength fibers, is insensitive to dust and mud, and runs stably under dry friction conditions. The EPX is designed for high-load hinge points, with a compressive strength of up to 120 MPa, capable of withstanding the impact and edge loads generated when the header is being lifted.

Specific application points: The EPX heavy-duty bearings are used at the header hydraulic lifting hinge joints, bearing a maximum downward thrust of 15 t. The reel oscillating mechanism and unloading auger rotary supports use EPG general-purpose bearings, suited to low-to-medium load oscillating motion. Each harvester uses a total of 22 SAVI plastic bearings. The recommended shaft material is surface-hardened steel (HRC 55–60); when paired with EPG material, the friction coefficient is only 0.08–0.15.

"Previously, we had to dismantle and clean or replace the bronze bushings at the end of every harvest season — twice a year for two seasons. After switching to SAVI plastic bearings, we ran them for three consecutive harvest seasons and then checked: the inner bore showed almost no wear. That was something we wouldn't have dared to imagine before."

Customer Benefits

  • Three seasons of maintenance-free operation: Bearing life extended from two seasons to more than three, with zero maintenance downtime during harvest seasons.

  • 68% reduction in complaints: Header lifting seizure essentially eliminated, with significantly improved user satisfaction.

  • 40% weight reduction: Approximately 3.5 kg saved per machine, reducing the header cantilever load and improving overall machine balance.

  • Mud-water resistance without rusting: SAVI-EP material never rusts or seizes; simple washing after paddy field operations suffices.

  • Vibration and impact absorption: The low elastic modulus of the plastic effectively absorbs header vibration and impact.

  • Paint-ready, no disassembly: Bearings can be installed before painting and used directly afterward, eliminating a downstream process step.
